About this calculator

Conduit fill rules limit how much of a raceway's internal cross-sectional area its conductors can occupy, so conductors can be pulled in without damaging insulation and so the assembly can dissipate heat. The maximum fill percentage depends on how many conductors share the conduit: 53% for a single conductor, 31% for two, and 40% for three or more. This calculator sums the insulated cross-sectional area of the conductors you specify, divides by the applicable fill fraction to get the minimum required conduit area, and picks the smallest standard EMT trade size that clears it.

Use it to size conduit for a feeder or a group of branch circuits sharing a raceway, or to check whether an existing conduit has room for one more conductor. The result shows the actual resulting fill percentage so you can see the margin — or how close you are to the next size up.

This calculator assumes all conductors are the same size and insulation type (THHN/THWN-class) and sizes EMT only; rigid metal conduit (RMC), PVC, and other raceway types have different internal areas at the same trade size and would need their own table. For a raceway with mixed conductor sizes, sum the actual insulated areas from the governing code table by hand and compare against the same fill-percentage rule shown here. Always verify the final trade size against the code edition and any local amendments in effect.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum conduit fill percentage?

53% for a single conductor, 31% for two conductors, and 40% for three or more conductors, per NEC Chapter 9 Table 1. The percentage decreases as conductor count increases mainly to leave room to pull the conductors without damaging insulation.

Do grounding conductors count toward conduit fill?

Yes — every conductor in the raceway, including equipment grounding conductors, counts toward total fill area, even though grounding conductors typically don't count toward the derating conductor-count rules used for ampacity.

Why does this only cover EMT?

Different raceway types (RMC, IMC, PVC Schedule 40/80) have different internal areas at the same nominal trade size. EMT is the most common raceway for interior branch and feeder circuits — for other raceway types, substitute the correct internal area from the governing code table.
